Namaste or Not Today?

Hey lovely people! It’s that time of year again where we roll out our yoga mats, twist ourselves into human pretzels, and pretend we’re as flexible as we were when we were kids (spoiler alert: we’re not, but hey, we try!). Yep, it’s International Yoga Day, and I’m here to share some giggles, insights, and the incredible benefits of yoga for our bodies.
Yoga and Your Body: The Perfect Love Story
First, let’s talk about the magic yoga does for our bodies. If you’ve ever wondered why yogis seem to float through life with a serene smile, it’s partly because yoga works wonders. Here’s a rundown of why your body will thank you for a regular yoga practice:
- Flexibility: You might not touch your toes on day one, but give it time. Yoga gently stretches your muscles, making them more flexible and less prone to injury.
- Strength: From warrior poses to plank, yoga is a full-body workout that builds muscle strength. You’ll be surprised at how toned you get without lifting a single weight!
- Posture: Hours at a desk can turn us into hunchbacked slouches. Yoga helps realign your spine, improving posture and easing back pain.
- Balance: Ever tried standing on one leg while texting? Yoga enhances your balance, making you less likely to topple over in daily life (and more graceful on the dance floor).
- Relaxation: With all the stretching and deep breathing, yoga is a natural stress-buster. It lowers cortisol levels and helps you find your inner zen.
Laughs and Lessons
Question; if a ‘tree’ falls in a yoga studio, does it make a sound?
My yoga journey started out with Core Power Yoga on UPenn’s campus many years ago. I was curious and bendier, convinced I could do anything if I tried really hard (these days I descend a flight of stairs cautiously).
From awkwardly toppling over in tree pose to accidentally kicking over my water bottle in warrior three, I’ve had my fair share of yoga bloopers. But through all the laughs and wobbles, I’ve learned to embrace the journey and celebrate the small victories—like finally holding a crow pose without face-planting! I did, start clapping excitedly and of course, I fell over. But I remember walking back to the dorm with a grinning like a Cheshire cat.

It’s YOUR Practice!
One of the best things about yoga is that it’s for everyone, regardless of age, size, or fitness level. Here are some tips to make your yoga practice uniquely yours:
- Start Small: Begin with beginner-friendly poses and gradually work your way up. There’s no rush to become a yoga master overnight.
- Use Props: Blocks, straps, and bolsters are your friends. They help you achieve poses safely and comfortably.
- Listen to Your Body: Yoga isn’t about pushing through pain. Respect your body’s limits and take breaks when needed.
- Find Your Flow: Whether it’s a vigorous vinyasa or a calming restorative class, find a style that resonates with you.

Get Your Yoga On!
So, with today June 21 being International Yoga Day, let’s all commit to showing our bodies some love with a little yoga. Grab a mat, find a quiet space, and let’s stretch, breathe, and laugh our way to better health.
Remember, yoga is a journey, not a destination. It’s about progress, not perfection.
And hey, if you find yourself tangled up in a pose or giggling uncontrollably at your own clumsiness, just remember—you’re in good company. We’re all in this together, finding balance and bliss one pose at a time.
Namaste, my friends!

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:11 – NIV
