In celebration of the Donut (or is it Doughnut?)

Ahhhh donuts, fried rings of sweet dough that have been bringing joy to the masses since the 1920s bite after delicious, melty bite. Considering how many people love them, it’s only right they have their own day.

Every year, since 1938 National Donut Day has been celebrated to honor The Salvation Army “Lassies” of World War I. These ladies served donuts to soldiers in France helping boost morale at the front lines by bringing them a little reminder of home. At that time, American Infantrymen were called “doughboys”.

Coincidence? Maybe. Or maybe it might have to do with the US Military operations at the Mexican border. Either way it has nothing to do with Three 6 Mafia.

National Donut Day started out as a fundraiser for The Chicago Salvation Army. The aim at that time was to help those in need during the Great Depression. Lately, it seems we have entered a Depression worse than that of 1930’s. Thankfully, we have donuts to bring us a little cheer.

Every year on the first Friday in June, we celebrate National Donut Day. Participating bakeries and coffee shops offer donut deals to their customers. Now that this is celebrated internationally, chances are no matter what part of the world you’re in, June 5th 2020 will be sweet.

This year, though, considering the current state of the world, (COVID is still lurking out there) bakeries are being especially sweet to us.

KrispyKreme is offering a free donut at any local shop June 1 -June 5. You can chose any donut you want to enjoy any day you want.

Yayyy Donut Work Week!!! But what about the other two days?

Duck Donuts is offering it’s REWARDS members a free cinnamon sugar donut offer, redeemable June 5-7. You must register on the Duck Donuts Rewards app before 11:59 pm on June 4th.
Grubhub is also offering a free half-dozen donuts on Dunkin’ orders of $10 or more on June 6 and June 7.

And on the day itself?

Well, Dunkin’ Donuts is offering guests a free classic donut of their choice with the purchase of any beverage. Here too, you’re offered the option to choose between Boston Kreme, Glazed, Glazed Chocolate, Jelly Filled and more.

Your local bakeries will most likely be ringing in the day in some form or the other. Call them up and find out what they’ve got planned. But be mindful though, most of these businesses have been hard hit with the current economic crisis. If the deals they are offering are not to your expectations, it’s probably because they cannot afford it.

Be kind to them. Small businesses are hurting right now; remember what He says in Ephesians.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32 – NIV

How will you be celebrating National Donut Day? What donut combinations have you thought up?

 Decisions, decisions…..I’m thinking donut burger.

Dangerous, right? How do I justify the calories? Maybe if I add some fruits instead.

Watch it though, at this rate you’ll be as round as a donut hole by the time the week is over. The average donut could easily pack on 300 calories. Either way, donut be too afraid of the calories (see what I did there?) .
Celebrate this National Donut Day as safely as you can. Opt for delivery or curbside pick up whenever available; and share, share, share.
